Valentine’s Day is upon us and love is in the air, from pink and red delights filling grocery stores to new romantic comedies hitting screens big and small.
But nothing quite says romance like a love song, and The Globe wanted to know what makes an adoring ballad or an infectious anthem really pluck at readers’ heartstrings.
So at risk of starting a readers’ (or lovers’!) quarrel in the comments, our audience team asked readers to vote in a friendly 16-song competition that pitted beloved classics against modern hits and icons against icons.
Here are the beloved love songs Globe readers said were missing from our Valentine’s Day bracket
And whatever we requested, readers signed, sealed and delivered. There were nearly 24,000 votes cast over four rounds of voting, and we received more than 100 emails and comments about what the songs meant to you or which songs you wanted to see instead.
In the end, the final round was a re-coronation for the King of Rock and Roll himself. Elvis’s classic ballad Can’t Help Falling In Love won over Neil Young’s ode to enduring love Harvest Moon by around 40 votes.

Here are all 16 love songs in our bracket, curated in a Valentine’s Day playlist.
